In chapters 28 through 47 of the novel Diary of a Sorority House Mom, the author talks about her struggles as being a sorority house mom. All of the girls are returning back to the house after a long Christmas break. She woke up to one of the girls, Maya, yelling and screaming and telling her to go downstairs. She thought something was very wrong until Maya told her that they were out of cream cheese. Ann resolves Maya's problem by bringing out a spare tub of cream cheese for her. Ann is amazed that there have been no thefts in the sorority with the 65 girls staying in the house. She realizes how much integrity each and every one of the girls have. Ann later realizes that not all of the girls are in their rooms every night and asks a lady named Sara, who is the house manager, where they would be. Sara says that they only keep those rooms to be with their boyfriends and so their parents do not find out that they live with their boyfriends half of the time. Ann was away at a seminar when she got a call from her friend Jean who was watching over the sorority while she was gone. Ann was relieved when Jean said it was only a little incident in a different sorority. Jean had to kick out a boy at three o'clock in the morning. Each year, the sororities and fraternities held an event to raise money for different charities. Ann's house had won the contest four years in a row so everyone was trying to beat them. Ann's sorority thought they were beat, although, they ended up pulling through and they won first place. This gave them bragging rights and a large check to give to their charity. After being in the sorority for awhile, Ann realized all of the stress everyone had in order to graduate on time. A Delta Zeta was killed in a car crash, one of Ann's Alpha Xi died of a blood clot, and everyone else was stressed about school. After all the stress, the girls all went on spring break and then after a week of fun, they all returned back to the house. One day Ann was walking around in the house and heard someone crying behind a door. It was a girl named Misty. After a long time of comforting her, Ann found out that Misty was premed and absolutely hated chemistry. Misty was having lots of problems in her life and decided that her life was basically over. Ann told her that it would all be okay and she just needed to calm down. Ann told the other girls that Misty was having some problems so they all decided to never go anywhere without asking Misty if she wanted to come. Finally, Misty's mom showed up and was able to get her a prescription for anti-anxiety medication. A couple weeks passed and it was time for graduation. Ann decorated the house with posters of the seniors that would be graduating and she planned many events to happen before the end of the year. The first year of Ann's career as a sorority mom was over and she was getting many offers to move and become moms at different sororities. Ann could not bear to leave Alpha Xi and her daughter so she decided to keep her job. She packed up the house for the summer and made her way to see her daughter Abbi. After their vacation, Ann returned to the sorority in order to get ready for the next year. Ann loved having the house to herself but she missed all the fun and loving girls. She got the house all neat and tidy and the girls returned home. Ann had to go through the challenge of hiring a new chef, but this time it was a little easier. Ann was very prepared for her second year and this time people were asking her for help when their houses had problems. When Ann saw her girls come back, she realized that summer had changed them. The juniors were now bullying the underclassmen and a mean girl clique had formed. The sorority held a huge initiation event to welcome all of the new girls into the sorority and they all dressed very formally. One of the girls, Bethany, went missing after the party and Ann had no idea where she could be. A couple days later, Ann ran into Bethany on the streets and Bethany told her she was just stressed and had to get away. After the girls had a lovely Thanksgiving, it was time for Christmas break. Ann helped the girls off to vacation and made a list of things to do for the girls before they had to leave. Ann was so happy with the semester they spent together and was excited for the next when the girls all left.

Essential Question: Should hazing be outlawed in sororities and fraternities.
Claim: Yes, hazing needs to be outlawed in all sororities and fraternities around the world.

| This girl is being encouraged to drink the shots even though she does not look like she wants to do it. |
Reason: Hazing is peer pressure because it forces people to do things they do not want to do. In order to get into a fraternity, some fraternities make the possible candidates do terrible things in order to be accepted into the fraternity. The things that some of the fraternities make the people do are sometimes illegal or hard to do. Many of the candidates do not want to do the things the fraternites make them do but they feel pressured to do them. These acts can result in the loss of life and major punishments by the law.
