Objective Summary #2

In chapters 28 through 47 of the novel Diary of a Sorority House Mom, the author talks about her struggles as being a sorority house mom.  All of the girls are returning back to the house after a long Christmas break.  She woke up to one of the girls, Maya, yelling and screaming and telling her to go downstairs.  She thought something was very wrong until Maya told her that they were out of cream cheese.  Ann resolves Maya's problem by bringing out a spare tub of cream cheese for her.  Ann is amazed that there have been no thefts in the sorority with the 65 girls staying in the house.  She realizes how much integrity each and every one of the girls have.  Ann later realizes that not all of the girls are in their rooms every night and asks a lady named Sara, who is the house manager, where they would be.  Sara says that they only keep those rooms to be with their boyfriends and so their parents do not find out that they live with their boyfriends half of the time.  Ann was away at a seminar when she got a call from her friend Jean who was watching over the sorority while she was gone.  Ann was relieved when Jean said it was only a little incident in a different sorority.  Jean had to kick out a boy at three o'clock in the morning.  Each year, the sororities and fraternities held an event to raise money for different charities.  Ann's house had won the contest four years in a row so everyone was trying to beat them.  Ann's sorority thought they were beat, although, they ended up pulling through and they won first place.  This gave them bragging rights and a large check to give to their charity.  After being in the sorority for awhile, Ann realized all of the stress everyone had in order to graduate on time.  A Delta Zeta was killed in a car crash, one of Ann's Alpha Xi died of a blood clot, and everyone else was stressed about school.  After all the stress, the girls all went on spring break and then after a week of fun, they all returned back to the house.  One day Ann was walking around in the house and heard someone crying behind a door.  It was a girl named Misty.  After a long time of comforting her, Ann found out that Misty was premed and absolutely hated chemistry.  Misty was having lots of problems in her life and decided that her life was basically over.  Ann told her that it would all be okay and she just needed to calm down.  Ann told the other girls that Misty was having some problems so they all decided to never go anywhere without asking Misty if she wanted to come.  Finally, Misty's mom showed up and was able to get her a prescription for anti-anxiety medication.  A couple weeks passed and it was time for graduation.  Ann decorated the house with posters of the seniors that would be graduating and she planned many events to happen before the end of the year.  The first year of Ann's career as a sorority mom was over and she was getting many offers to move and become moms at different sororities.  Ann could not bear to leave Alpha Xi and her daughter so she decided to keep her job.  She packed up the house for the summer and made her way to see her daughter Abbi.  After their vacation, Ann returned to the sorority in order to get ready for the next year.  Ann loved having the house to herself but she missed all the fun and loving girls.  She got the house all neat and tidy and the girls returned home.  Ann had to go through the challenge of hiring a new chef, but this time it was a little easier.  Ann was very prepared for her second year and this time people were asking her for help when their houses had problems.  When Ann saw her girls come back, she realized that summer had changed them.  The juniors were now bullying the underclassmen and a mean girl clique had formed.  The sorority held a huge initiation event to welcome all of the new girls into the sorority and they all dressed very formally.  One of the girls, Bethany, went missing after the party and Ann had no idea where she could be.  A couple days later, Ann ran into Bethany on the streets and Bethany told her she was just stressed and had to get away.  After the girls had a lovely Thanksgiving, it was time for Christmas break.  Ann helped the girls off to vacation and made a list of things to do for the girls before they had to leave.  Ann was so happy with the semester they spent together and was excited for the next when the girls all left.

Essential Question: Should hazing be outlawed in sororities and fraternities.

Claim: Yes, hazing needs to be outlawed in all sororities and fraternities around the world.

This girl is being encouraged to drink the shots even though she does not look like she wants to do it.

Reason: Hazing is peer pressure because it forces people to do things they do not want to do.  In order to get into a fraternity, some fraternities make the possible candidates do terrible things in order to be accepted into the fraternity.  The things that some of the fraternities make the people do are sometimes illegal or hard to do.  Many of the candidates do not want to do the things the fraternites make them do but they feel pressured to do them.  These acts can result in the loss of life and major punishments by the law.

Objective Summary

Diary of a Sorority House Mom Summary

In chapters one through 27 of the novel, Diary of a Sorority House Mom, the author, Ann Hyman writes about her experience being in a sorority and years later being a sorority house mom.  Ann loved having her daughters friends over and loved to take care of them while they were there.  Ann decided to be a sorority mom because she loved girls a lot and wanted to help out at a school.  Ann loved being in a sorority as a college student and wanted to get back into the lives of a teenage girl. Ann has many jobs in the sorority like: keeping the house clean, making sure the girls follow all the rules, she makes sure there is enough supplies, like food, for the girls, and she was in charge for everything the girls did inside the house.  Ann informs all of the girls about the rules she is making to the house and implies that every girl should follow them if they do not want to get in trouble.  Claudia, one of the girls in the sorority, and Ann were separating produce for storage when they saw grey fog rising from underneath them.  There was already a fire in the house and Ann had not even been in that house for long.  Ann got all of the girls out of the house and the fire departament made their way over to take out the breaker box fire.  Ann helped with recruitement to bring more girls into the sorority and led tours throughout the house.  Many girls asked Ann about the rules and the consequences in the house and they all were very curious as to what sorority house life was like.  Ann addresses many times that she is very concerned with the girls safety.  Twenty eight new members were accepted into the sorority and a big recruitment party was held in the house.  After recruitment was over, a bunch of the sorority house moms went out for a drink and had a good time talking about each of their sororities.  Later, Ann and her sorority had their first formal dinner but it did not go as expected.  Ann was very suprised when the girl's showed up in genes instead of dresses.  The girls all decided to throw a huge party at the house and it was a complete nightmare for Ann.  She ended up staying up the entire night trying to fix the house up before the morning.  Later in these chapters, the girls all have initiation which was a formal ceremony where girls cross over into full sisterhood and symbolically recieve their sorority pins.  Thanksgiving came along and all of the Sorority houses were coming to a close on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  Students were not allowed to stay in the houses but Ann let them stay and cooked them all a nice Thanksgiving dinner.  Ann was having problems with the Executive Chef because the food was not great and he would always come in late after doing his own personal things.  She asked him to leave and he turned in his keys on Friday after dinner service.  Finally, all of the girls started to finish their finals before Christmas break and were making their way out of their house and onto vacation.  Ann was in charge of checking the girls out of the house and making sure they were all on the right track in order to get to the place where they were going.  Ann finished making sure the girls were all settled and implied that she needed a break of her own.

Discussion Question #3

Doug Anderson creates a lot of tension between a group of girls throughout the entire book.  Discuss Doug's relationships with all of the girls and what happens in the end.

Doug is stuck in a love triangle and can't
choose which girl he likes the most.
Doug is a girl's dream man.  He has bright blue eyes and he is drop dead gorgeous.  On the outside he seems to be a perfect guy; However, on the inside, he never knows how to make up his mind in relationships.  Doug constantly goes from girl to girl and it leads to some conflicts between friends.  When Diane first sees Doug, she falls head over heels for him.  She loved him for two years before he actually made a move on her.  They went on one date and it ended in tears.  Doug had broken her heart after she had told him that she loved him.  Doug then moves on to one of Diane's best friends, Karen.  Karen knew that dating Doug would be a bad idea so she tries to stay calm. "He's just so ridiculously handsome.  I can barely take a full breath" (206).   Doug knew he wouldn't have a shot with Karen because of what he did to Diane so he decides to move on again.  Doug then sets his eyes on Laurie.  Laurie really likes Doug but she does not think that dating him would be the right thing to do.  Although, Laurie decides to date Doug and it last for awhile.  "Today, Doug Anderson and I have been dating for three years.  I don't want to believe these two facts, not being a bridesmaid and dating Doug, are related in any way" (250).  Laurie is very happy with Doug but she still wonders if the girls are mad at him for what he did.  While Laurie and Doug were dating,  Doug tries to hook back up with Karen.  The good thing is, is that Karen decided to stay away from Doug because she knew that Doug was with Laurie.  Doug and Laurie end up breaking up and Laurie was very upset.  "Laurie, all alone in the world, falls for the first guy who bothers to pay attention to her for more than five minutes at a stretch" (283).  The girls knew that Laurie and Doug would not end well, but no one thought that it would last three years.  Doug is a perfect example of a child.  Just like kids, he can not make up his mind on the things in life and he is also very greedy with the girls he goes out with.  In the end, the girls all realize that dating Doug was a bad idea and they decide to keep their relationships intact instead of letting the be destroyed by a stupid guy.

Discussion Question #2

Discuss why guys have a hard time being honest in a relationship.
Diane is furious at Doug because of what he said to her.
Guys have a tendency of getting bored during relationships.  After you start dating someone for a long time, nothing excited ever happens.  You start off having your heart completely in the relationship but as time goes on the spark in your heart starts to die off.  For example, when you first get a new car you feel like you're the coolest person ever.  Everyone is jealous you have a car but as time goes on, new cars come out and you start to want a new car.  In a relationship, guys like the girl so much in the beginning, but as time goes on they see new girls they want to go out with and they start to think about the relationship they are in.  In the book, Sorority Sisters, the author shows many instances where guys get bored with the girls they are dating.  "Diane, this has been great, but I want you to know, I feel like I have to tell you, to be honest with you.  I feel no love for you" (128).  Diane poured her heart out to Doug after loving him since freshman year.  Diane and Doug spent the night together and Doug was all in for the beginning.  Once their night was over, Doug lost interest in Diane.  Diane was heartbroken but later realizes that she needs to move on.  Sometimes it is a good thing that guys are honest when they say that they don't love you anymore.  For instance, I would rather date someone for a short time rather than dating them for years and have them break your heart after you thought they loved you.  All relationships have to be honest to be real.  You can go through a relationship and think you love someone until you realize they have only been telling you lies.  It is a good thing that Doug told Diane the truth before things got too serious between them.  A girl will be upset when you tell them the ugly truth, but in the end, they will get over it.  Telling the truth is a very difficult thing to do when you know it will hurt someone.  Doug did not want to hurt Diane later in her life so he chose to do the right thing and end it between them as soon as possible.
